Callaway Of the Month October '03
Welcome! The Callaway Owners Group is dedicated to the preservation of the world's most powerful Corvette.
Tony Cardiello's 1991 Callaway Corvette
This month, we feature Tony Cardiello’s 1991 Callaway Supernatural 490 Corvette.
The first time I encountered Tony’s Callaway was at the Corvettes @ Carlisle show in Pennsylvania. It was parked amongst a seemingly endless sea of ZR1’s however, the unique Callaway Aerobody and Dymag wheels set it apart from the crowd.
For many show seasons, I saw his Callaway and often stared upon its “Spies Hecker” glossy red finish as an admirer, and had even read about it in various car magazines that it had been featured in. Those magazines have included Automobile, Corvette Fever, Cars & Parts (Corvette) and, Chevy & High Performance however, it was not until recently that I got the inside scoop on his special LT5 based Supernatural.
This Callaway is what Tony describes as, “one of two full boat CR1’s”. By full boat, Tony means that it is loaded to the hilt with everything that Reeves Callaway has ever had on tap for these cars – and then some…
Besides the Supernatural 490 engine, options on Tony’s CR1 include the Callaway Coilover suspension (which eliminates the transverse mounted stock springs for better control), massive Brembo brakes which include the huge calipers visible through the 5 spoke Dymag magnesium wheels. The Brembo setup has a twin caliper design for the rear that incorporates the parking brake into a second binder. The Dymags on Tony’s car are 17x9.5 and 17x11 and were very difficult to obtain due to wheel mold issues, in the ultra wide rear width.
The car also features the beautiful Callaway Aerobody with optional center exit “DD” exhaust and then there is the interior… Inside, Tony’s Callaway sports the full leather interior. The Callaway leather option covers virtually every part of the inside in supple Connolly leather hides and has Wilton wool carpeting on the floors. The five-point roll bar is also covered with the same leather and the seats have been embroidered with “CR1” as another visual clue that this machine is really something special ;) Speaking of special, Tony added a special touch necessary when you have the wide 315 series tires and you can no longer carry a spare – Tony added a “secret panel” in the rear trunk area for a spare and the tire bag. The cover is carpeted and looks as if it had always been that way.
Tony enjoys his CR1, drives it regularly and participates in various club events with the only other “full boat” CR1 that resides in his area. Tony is no stranger to Callaways – in addition to the CR1, he owns a C9 Callaway Supernatural Impala and recently added Callaways latest creation – the Commemorative Edition C8 Camaro to his stables.
So what is next in store for the guy with a C6, C8, and C9? By looking at one of his license plates, one would think a C12 can’t be far behind ;)
Thanks Tony for sharing your Callaway with us!
