Callaway Of the Month April '04
Welcome! The Callaway Owners Group is dedicated to the preservation of the world's most powerful Corvette.
Mark Meltzer's Callaway Corvette
1996 Callaway SuperNatural 450 Grand Sport #001
This month we feature a unique Callaway SuperNatural® Corvette owned by Mark Meltzer.
This car is the first of four Callaway SuperNatural® Grand Sports crafted by the crew in Old Lyme and has many distinctive touches.
One of 1,000 Grand Sports made in 1996, it was ordered in late 1995 and arrived at the dealership in the spring of 1996 complete with every available option for that year & model. Mark tells me that while he went to some of the “big name” Corvette dealers, he got this one right in his own back yard at his local Chevy store. Mark enjoyed the car that summer gaining recognition as part of “Chip’s Choice” at Corvettes @ Carlisle in August of 1996. Mark’s Grand Sport was display vehicle #90 in the ongoing series which feature rare & significant Corvettes built over the years.
Not long after that event Mark’s car took a different path. In a quest for more power, Mark sent his Grand Sport to Callaway Cars in October of 1996 for the full SuperNatural® treatment. His car features the SuperNatural® 450 engine package with their stainless steel exhaust system, Callaway single mass clutch & flywheel setup, and unique shift knob. Mark enjoys his SuperNatural® both on the street and the track. Track use made it necessary to add a few more items for both performance & safety, these items include:
· Chrome Moly race roll bar w/ Simpson 5 point harness system.
· Baer Brake Systems 2 pc Eradispeed drilled / slotted rotors, stainless brake lines & modified brake bias spring.
· Full-length ceramic coated headers.
· MSD 6AL Ignition with 8.5mm Super Conductor plug wires.
· Granatelli Motorsports ported, hi-flow mass air sensor.
· Relocated intake air sensor.
· Modified radiator shroud with K&N filter and open lid.
· Throttle body coolant bypass.
· 160 deg. thermostat.
· Hurst short throw shifter & CAGS Bypass.
· Modified front spoiler w/ brake cooling ducts.
Mark’s Callaway has also been selected twice as “Celebrity Picks” at Corvettes @ Carlisle. It was chosen in 1999 by Jim Prather – Editor of Vette Vues Magazine and then in 2003 by William Locke – Event director, Bloomington Gold. As Mark put it, “it was not just the honor of being selected, but also who selected your car”. Mark’s car has recently been invited to the upcoming Bloomington Gold Special Collection XX, which will be held in June 2004, highlighting the Corvettes of Reeves Callaway.
Mark feels his car, “is the perfect representation of Callaway Engineering in that it can go from street car to track car like it was designed to do, without missing a beat” and I must say I couldn’t agree more – Enjoy your Callaway Mark!
