2009 Q3 Callaway of the Quarter

The last Callaway Twin Turbo ordered

In December 1991, I was treated by Reeves Callaway to one of those intoxicating tours through their Old Lyme, CT facilities. The adrenaline was already pumping as we visited their out building and he introduces me to a Speedster that was being built. Reeves, ever the high pressure car salesman ( I say this with admiration) said, Why dont you let us build you a Speedster?. I told him that I already owned a 1991 black/black convertible that I had purchased 6 months earlier. He replied "Great! Let us convert it" ....and I did.

What you see is a non-B2K Callaway Twin Turbo 500 Series car (#506) which I ordered in December 1991. The car was fitted with all the options for a twin turbo engine along with the Aerobody, custom Black Violet paint ( I refer to it as Black Candy Purple), coil over suspension, center exhaust, Brembo brakes, Bridgestone runflat wheels and tires and a custom roll bar. The roll bar was my personal touch to give it a Shelby Cobra flair.... oh well.

The car had 3500 miles when I delivered it to Callaway for the conversion and in 1997, circumstances forced me to sell it with only 9600 miles. The cars new owner resided 1300 miles away in Pittsburgh which was coincidently only 10 miles from where I grew up. I stayed in touch with the new owner and we became good friends. I even visited the car when I was in the city seeing family and asked to have the opportunity to buy it back someday. Last year, when he decided to thin the herd he gave me the opportunity to buy it back.

After 11 years, #506 came back home with only 10,100 miles on the odometer. I have been told by people in the know that since this is a non-B2K car, it is probably the last Callaway Twin turbo ever ordered... and I never thought about that at the time. Kinda cool how she was born on a whim almost 20 years ago and today is crowned Callaway Corvette of the Quarter.
