Mazda Callaway Race Car?

Post by kingforward »

I am not sure if Callaway only provided the experience and technology and the parts

or that all cars were built inside. :wtf

It looks to me this was a normal mazda protege streetcar , and later changed into racer.

Well.... I think its a strech but here is my theory.

Callaway turbocharged the Mazda Speed Protege for Masda. They did about 5K Mazda Speed Proteges for Mazda, all new, as these cars (or engines) made their way to the US. So if you a good marketer and some shop turned the car into a race car, then I too would claim that it was a Callaway modified engine because it was turbocharged by Callaway.

Bit of clarification. 2750 MazdaSpeed Proteges were built worldwide, 1000 of these were sent to canada, 2750 to the US. these cars were fitted with the Protege ES DOHC 16V 2.0L Inline 4 cylinder, a 5 speed manual transmission with a Tochigi Fuji Limited Slip Differential, and a Callaway Designed & Built Garrett GT25RS Dual Ball Bearing Turbocharger kit. Using a .80 a/r intake side and a .63 a/r exhaust side on the T25 wheel it combined large psi capabilities with quick spool time. (Mine reachs 12psi of boost at 2300rpm.) The engine code for these vehicles is the FS-DET whereas the japanese "equivalent" uses the N/A OBD1 170hp FS-ZE in the MazdaSpeed Familia. The car has its downfalls in OEM form but I have a feeling the kit that callaway suggeste and the kit that was finally approved by MNAO and installed were two totally different animals since I cannot see callaway using a highly inefficient side mounted intercooler with plastic endtanks and piping. The stock boost level was also kept at a paltry 6.5 psi. Hope i provided some clarity without making an ass of myself.

I got on here actually in hopes of obtaining some more information on the callaway side of the equation as very little is actually known in the protege community. I had been modifying this car but with the release of the newer mazdaspeed vehicles the aftermarket support has gone to crud. I have since turned my attention towards my house and turned the protege mostly back to stock. I have yet to find a good build sheet telling me how many of what optioned mazdaspeeds were built. But I'll provide what I know...

Options Above the normal Protege Included in the MazdaSpeed Package:
170hp/160trq Callaway Turbocharged 2.0L Inline 4 Cylinder

2003.5 Available Colors

Blazing Yellow Mica
(Note: 2003.5 MazdaSpeed recieved a Black Chrome wheel finish)

If memory serves me correctly, 1250 03 MazdaSpeeds were built in Hiroshima, Japan, while 1500 2003.5's were built. 1000 total MazdaSpeeds were sent to Canada only leaving 1750 in the USA. Most of these unfortunately have been totalled or stolen and stripped. Mine itself is a theft recovery car. Most of the magazines say the car was to run a 15.7 1/4 miles with a high 80's mph trap speed, however, I personally ran a 15.2 @ 91 in mine completely 100% bone stock. It has not made a successful track pass since the onslaught of modifications. fastest time as to date is a 15.0 @ 96 with a horrible launch. This may seem kind of pathetic for a turbo car but we have to remember this was at the factory 6.5 psi, with two catalytic converters, on all season tires, all while comforming to US emmisions specifications. Also the regular Protege were running low to mid 16's at best.

I believe the engines were modified after the cars arrived in the US/Canada in California before heading to their respective dealers.

There are those on here that saw more of the project and hopefully they will chime in.

Please do chime in by all means. Theres very little known in the protege community about the callaway side of the vehicle. I didnt even know it had a callaway code name until i had owned the car for about a year.
